Thank goodness for the defense, or this could have ended up being a bad loss for Tennessee. In fact, it could up being one of the worst losses in history, almost like losing to Wyoming in Phillip Fulmer’s last season as head coach.

  • Tennessee played a great game defensively as the offense struggled, particularly the offensive line. Honestly, if it wasn’t for a Marque Callaway punt return, the Vols could have easily lost this game.

In the first quarter, Callaway took a punt 82 yards for the first score of the game, which ended up being the biggest play of the game.

It’s quite embarrassing that it took a punt return to beat a Charlotte team that had no business being in the game.

Later in the first quarter, Jarrett Guarantano drove Tennessee down the field in what appeared to be the start of a blowout. However, the Vols didn’t score again.

Think about Callaway not scoring that touchdown and the game 7-3 in the fourth quarter.

Charlotte certainly had their chances to get the win. It’s hard to count this as a good win, but it ranks third because it woke Tennessee up for the showdown with Kentucky the following week.
