Tennessee football: How did Vols coaching candidates in 2017 fare in 2018?
Before the Greg Schiano fiasco, John Currie was clearly talking to Dan Mullen. And it looks like he would have ended up on Rocky Top as well were it not for the Florida Gators coming calling. Given the fact that he’s not a great recruiter, Mullen probably made the right choice since it’s easier to get talent in Florida.

I personally must apologize to the Florida Gators and Dan Mullen. Heading into the season, I called it ridiculous that people just assumed UF would be better than Tennessee football. After all, both teams were getting a new head coach.
On top of that, they each had four wins in 2017, their game in The Swamp came down to a Hail Mary, and they were both switching offensive and defensive schemes. However, Florida proved me wrong.
Mullen inherited as many problems as Pruitt did and was undisputedly better. He went 9-3 on the year and has his team in the Top 10. At one point, they were in the College Football Playoff talk while in contention to win the East.
Now, there is a bit of a caveat. Mullen had a much easier schedule overall than Pruitt had. He avoided the Alabama Crimson Tide from the West. And he didn’t play a winning team in his non-conference schedule.
However, Mullen beat the Vols in Knoxville along with the Vanderbilt Commodores and South Carolina Gamecocks, two teams who beat Rocky Top. Tennessee could only nullify slightly that by beating the Kentucky Wildcats, who beat Florida in The Swamp.
