Tennessee football: How did Vols coaching candidates in 2017 fare in 2018?
Jeff Brohn, like Mike Gundy, went 6-6 at a Power Five school with an easier schedule than what Tennessee football had. However, unlike Gundy, Brohm wasn’t coaching a team with a significantly worse schedule than the Vols.
As a result, we can weight his record of one game better a little more heavily. That combined with the win over the Ohio State Buckeyes is more than enough for us to give him the edge for his coaching job over Jeremy Pruitt.
The Vols almost had Brohm locked up in 2017. After Mike Gundy’s rejection, reports were out that John Currie had a deal in place but that he hadn’t gotten approval from the UT administration to offer the contract. After doing so and going back to Brohm, he reportedly elected to stay at Purdue.
Early on, it seemed like the Vols dodged a bullet. This team started 0-3. However, they showed dramatic improvement against the Missouri Tigers, their third game at home, and only lost by three. Two months later, Mizzou would beat the Vols by over 30. That’s the most significant bit of evidence that Brohm did better than Pruitt this year.
On top of that, Purdue beat Ohio State as we said. They didn’t lose to any team with a losing record either, and only three teams they played all year had losing records.
