This is another game that made the list for how thrilling it was. And it’s probably the only game on this list that played a role in keeping one of the two teams out of the NCAA Tournament, which makes it more significant.

With the Bruce Pearl-John Calipari days in the past, this game would be Cuonzo Martin in his first year against Josh Pastner, who was planning to cancel the series. But they still had two games scheduled left. This would be neither of those games.
The two teams were meeting in the Maui Invitational on the consolation side after Memphis lost to the Michigan Wolverines and Tennessee basketball lost to the Duke Blue Devils. And this as a game became the most thrilling one of all.
Memphis was a Top 10 team but locked in a dogfight with a UT team that was supposed to be rebuilding. That fight took not one, but two overtimes. Both teams were defensive specialists, but Will Barton’s scoring made the difference.
Still, in the second overtime, the Vols had a chance to tie, but they couldn’t score as time expired. As a result, Memphis got a Power Five win, and Tennessee fell to 2-2 before closing out the tournament against Chaminade.
Memphis would later beat the Vols the same year at home 69-51. Meanwhile, UT would find itself with the arrival of Jarnell Stokes in January, and they would go on a run. But they just missed the NCAA Tournament, and this was a game that might have cost them.
