Tennessee Vols morning report: Johnnie Jones honored, basketball recognition

Former Tennessee Vols running back Johnnie Jones being honored and basketball recognition lead our Volunteers news for Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018.

The early signing period remains the huge story of the week for the Tennessee Vols, but today’s news takes a look into the past when it comes to football. On top of that, there are numerous men’s basketball stories that are leading the way.

Our morning update on Rocky Top starts with a former football player being recognized in his hometown. When it comes to basketball, there’s some recognition there as well, but it’s a sense of deja vu.

Meanwhile, we have a preview of a women’s basketball game to bring you along with a recap of the final results of another sport. So there’s lots of good news out there today. Let’s start with the football honors.

Johnnie Jones has street named after himJeff Ireland, The Covington Leader

Former Tennessee Vols football running back Johnnie Jones had a street in Munford, Tenn. named after him on Monday. The Vol great played for Johnny Majors from 1981 to 1984, gaining over 1,000 yards rushing each of his final two years.

"The street leading into Poplar Park in Munford was renamed 33 Johnnie Jones Dr. Several people spoke, including Majors and Jones, who was clearly moved and thanked a lot of people, including his wife and family. Roy Meadors, who coached Jones at Munford High School in the early 1980s, attended, as did several of Jones’ former teammates at Tennessee and Munford."

Basketball unchanged in rankings – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

After beating the Memphis Tigers on the road, the Tennessee Vols men’s basketball team remained at No. 3 in the AP Poll and No. 4 in the Coaches Poll this week. They remain behind the Kansas Jayhawks and Duke Blue Devils in both polls.

"Tennessee entered the season as the No. 6 team in the AP Top 25, the highest the program has ever been ranked in the preseason poll. A move up to No. 5 lasted three weeks, before the overtime loss to then-No. 2 Kansas in the NIT Season Tip-Off championship game on Nov. 23 in New York. The drop continued to No. 7 the following week, before the upset of the Zags and the jump into the top three."

Admiral Schofield repeats as SEC Player of the WeekSECSports

Tennessee Vols men’s basketball forward Admiral Schofield repeated as SEC Player of the Week for his efforts in leading his team to victory over the Memphis Tigers. Schofield has jumped out to a monster senior season so far and had 29 points and 11 rebounds at Memphis.

"The senior converted 66.7 percent (8-of-12) of his field goals, 50 percent (4-of-8) of this 3-pointers and all nine of his free throw attempts. Schofield is the first Vol to post back-to-back games with at least 25 points since 2016. The Zion, Ill., native has surpassed 20 points in five of the last six games after entering the season with just eight 20-point performances in his career. For the second consecutive game, Schofield dropped 20 points in the second half."

Tennessee Lady Vols to host Stanford – UTSports

The No. 8 Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team has a huge test tonight against the No. 9 Stanford Cardinal. Tipoff is set for just after 6 p.m. E.T. at Thompson-Boling Arena.

"The Lady Vols will have gone eight complete days between games, entering with the momentum of an 88-82 victory over No. 12/12 Texas in Austin on Dec. 9. Stanford, meanwhile, comes to Knoxville after a 68-63 home win over No. 3/4 Baylor on Saturday. The Cardinal bounced back in strong fashion after falling at Gonzaga, 79-73, on Nov. 25."

Volleyball finishes No. 19AVCA.org

The Tennessee Lady Vols volleyball team finished No. 19 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association final poll. Only the Florida Gators and Kentucky Wildcats finished ahead of them in terms of SEC teams.
