The Tennessee Vols interviewing more offensive coordinator candidates and an SI feature on Grant Williams lead our Volunteers news for Friday, Jan. 4, 2019.

Happy Friday! It’s the first Friday of 2019, and the Tennessee Vols appear to have a lot to look forward to heading into the year. We’ve already detailed on numerous occasions how eventful the start of this year will be. Well, it’s looking more and more exciting.

Our morning update on Rocky Top today continues a football coaching search that just won’t end. It’s one of the embarrassing stories surrounding the program. However, there’s good news surrounding other sports on here.

We have a feature on a men’s basketball player to bring you, and there is a recap of a women’s basketball game. So, as it seems to have been for the past decade, where football comes up short, basketball is picking up the slack. Let’s start, though, with the football news.

Jeremy Pruitt interviews two candidates for OC – WVLT

Tennessee Vols football head coach Jeremy Pruitt interviewed recently fired Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian and Maryland Terrapins offensive coordinator Matt Canada this week. Both were interviewed to fill the Vols’ vacant offensive coordinator.position. Jim Chaney could be in the mix as well.

"At least for now, the Vols are approaching the end of that period without an offensive coordinator. Friday will be 40 days since the search for Tyson Helton’s replacement began. With former UT candidate Mike Yurcich being named Ohio State passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach, the search continues for Jeremy Pruitt."

Grant Williams featured in SI article – Dan Greene, SI.com

Tennessee Vols men’s basketball junior forward Grant Williams was featured in a Sports Illustrated article that came out Thursday. The story focused on him being an overachiever, which Rocky Top knew given the fact that he was a three-star, and it also touched on Rick Barnes’s job with UT and the other overachieving players he has. Here’s a bit of what it said about Williams.

"As a sophomore last season, the 6’ 7″ forward was voted the SEC Player of the Year, less than three seasons after being a roly-poly (his words) three-star recruit from Charlotte. He chose Tennessee over Yale, Harvard and Princeton, to the disappointment of his NASA-engineer mother, Teresa Johnson, after building a future Ivy Leaguer’s extracurricular résumé: studying a half-dozen instruments, including the violin and clarinet; tap-dancing a solo in Providence Day School’s production of Anything Goes; attending STEM programs and chess tournaments, once beating the nation’s top-ranked youth in the latter."

Lady Vols defeat Auburn Tigers in SEC opener – UTSports

The Tennessee women’s basketball team defeated the Auburn Tigers 78-69 on the road Thursday to win their first SEC game of the year. Ranked No. 10 in the nation, Holly Warlick’s program improved to 12-1 on the year while Auburn fell to 12-2.

"Senior Meme Jackson went five of eight from behind the arc and a perfect 6-of-6 from the line to lead Tennessee in scoring with 27 points. Sophomore Rennia Davis managed her fourth double-double of the season with 21 points and a career-high tying 14 rebounds. Zaay Greenalso found her way into double digits with 10 points while setting career highs in both rebounds and assists with eight and seven, respectively."
