2. Vision from the running backs

Madre London is now gone. But Tennessee football has a collection of elite athletes at running back, and they all showed what they could do at different times this year. And they’re adding a four-star in this recruiting class.

  • Returning contributors are Ty Chandler, Tim Jordan, Carlin Fils-Aime and Jeremy Banks. Chandler is the speed guy, Banks is the power back, and Jordan and Fils-Aime are the vision guys. Eric Gray, the new commitment, is another speed guy.

But the vision, which is the focus on Jordan, is something they all need to work on. While Chandler had 115 carries for 630 yards and four touchdowns, averaging nearly five and a half yards a carry, those numbers were skewed by a few gigantic runs. Jordan averaged slightly under four yards a carry with 132 attempts for 522 yards and three touchdowns.

Now, as the line developed throughout the year, holes began to open up late in the season. This was especially true Both guys were impactful in the passing game, but they missed far too many cuts and openings in the running game.

Another big indictment against Tyson Helton is he didn’t use Chandler enough, and that was a problem because if there’s no vision among your backs, then speed and agility become the most important things Chandler has both.

Going forward, though, the Vols running backs all have to have better vision. Jeremy Pruitt likes to use a lot of guys in the backfield, and while they had the excuse of a developing line early, it didn’t explain why they struggled late. That could only be explained by vision, and it’s why they had problems with balance against the Missouri Tigers and Vanderbilt Commodores despite Chandler’s 75-yard run.
