2. Make Jauan Jennings a go-to receiver.

This is a build off of our last point. But while Jim Chaney needs to establish a vertical passing game and take advantage of all the weapons he could have on the outside, it’s crucial that he establish at least one go-to receiver.

  • That go-to guy should be Jauan Jennings. Marquez Callaway should be the complement on the other side as the athletic receiver who makes great catches and is great with the ball in open space. Josh Palmer should be the third guy and the one who is mixed in at times. Brandon Johnson may want to redshirt.

Then you have the slot guy and tight end Chaney needs to get involved to stretch the field. But Jennings should always be the first option for Tennessee football. He’s not actually known for running the best routes, having the best hands or even being the best with the ball in open space on the Vols.

However, he is the ultimate gamer. At 6’3″ 221 pounds, Jennings is the toughest receiver on the team. He was third in receiving with 30 receptions for 438 yards and three touchdowns. However, he was coming off a season-ending injury and trying to get his rhythm back. Remember, as the No. 2 guy in 2016, he had 40 receptions for 580 yards and seven touchdowns.

This year, as a fifth-year senior, Jennings is the guy who should be the first option for whoever starts at quarterback, likely Jarrett Guarantano. The basic fundamentals are there, but being the ultimate gamer, as we said, adds that extra step to give Jennings superstar potential.

Jennings has made big catch after big catch in his career. He caught the go-ahead touchdown against the Florida Gators and the game-winning Hail Mary against the Georgia Bulldogs a week later back in 2016. This past year, he caught the go-ahead touchdown against the Auburn Tigers. This resume along with his talent and production have earned him the right to be the go-to guy in 2019. And Chaney doing that is exactly what this offense needs.
