We said on Wednesday that Jim Chaney needs to incorporate more slot receivers into the system. Well, Jordan Murphy and Tyler Byrd both fit that bill. However, Murphy is the one who makes our list of Tennessee football players most likely to benefit.

That’s because one staple of Chaney’s system is finding guys who can do a lot of things with the ball in their hands. Murphy has shown more of an ability to do that so far than Byrd has, and that’s why he’s the guy likely to benefit from this.

Remember, Murphy did have two carries for 58 yards this year. He’s got a good bit of speed and solid vision. And Chaney’s history shows that he’s going to want a guy like that who provides a change of pace.

Receivers that Chaney can mix in on trick running plays is a huge benefit to his offense, so you can bet that he’s going to look for guys who can do that. The most logical choice at receiver for him right now to fit that mold is going to be Murphy. So heading into his junior year, Chaney will likely give Murphy many more touches, which will help his profile.
