Rehired Tennessee football offensive coordinator Jim Chaney has faced the Volunteers, Jeremy Pruitt or both five times since he last left Rocky Top.

The last time Jim Chaney was calling a game for Tennessee football, he was filling in as interim coach. It was against the Kentucky Wildcats to close out the 2012 season, and the Vols won that game 37-17.

So you can say that Jeremy Pruitt brought in a guy who is undefeated as a head coach in the SEC to be his offensive coordinator. Okay, that’s the oldest joke in the book. And it’s not the premise of this post.

We’re looking at what happened after Chaney left Rocky Top. Over the last six years, Chaney has served as offensive coordinator at three different schools. Five of those years, he was offensive coordinator at one of two SEC schools.

During that time, he has faced either Tennessee football, Jeremy Pruitt as a defensive coordinator or both five times. Of course, when he was with the Vols, he went 0-4 against Pruitt, but Pruitt was just a defensive backs coach for the Alabama Crimson Tide, so we’re nog counting those.

Here, we’re going to look at the times Chaney went up against the Vols or Pruitt as a defensive coordinator. The results are a bit mixed, and UT fans were very familiar with what he liked to do a few times they saw him up close and personal.

In fact, some of the up close games Vols saw him call may have reminded them why they didn’t miss him. And that could be a concern as he comes back to Rocky Top, even if he is a great hire for the program overall.

But let’s look at how their new offensive coordinator fared against he school and head coach that just hired him. This is a look at the five games Jim Chaney as an offensive coordinator went up against either Tennessee football, Jeremy Pruitt as a defensive coordinator or both.
