No.2 – Jordan Bowden should be SEC Player of the Week

Jordan Bowden has been ballin’. Sometimes we all get caught up in who’s in the starting lineup. I’ll admit, growing up playing basketball, I always wanted to be in the starting lineup. That’s until I understood the game on a higher level.

Starting the game only means you are on the floor for the opening tip and your name gets called by the announcer. It honestly doesn’t matter who starts, and, in the case of Jordan Bowden, moving to the bench has been brought on a different player.

There have consistently been two knocks on Bowden throughout his career. 1- If the three-point shot isn’t falling, he isn’t going to score. 2- Sometimes he isn’t aggressive enough on the offensive side of the ball.

However, since moving to the bench, there isn’t a negative thing to say about the junior guard. He is scoring 19 points per game in conference play without shooting the three-point shot particularly well. The past two games, Bowden is just 1-of-7 from the three-point line but is shooting 50 percent from the field and is 12-of-13 from the free-throw line.

He is getting to the rim and drawing contact. Many of his points are coming in transition where no one can stop him getting to the rim. He is playing the best basketball of his career and is one of the reasons the Vols were able to beat Florida.

With 7:27 left in the game, Jordan Bowden took over. Here is a look at how the next two minutes of game action played out for the Vols.

3 points – 3 free throws

5 points – made layup

7 points – 2 free throws

10 points – three-point jumper

12 points – dunk

If that wasn’t enough, he then assisted on a John Fulkerson score to have his hand in 14 straight points. The run began with Tennessee trailing by two points to the Vols leading by four points.

Without Bowden, the Gators probably pull the upset and Volnation is having a rough Monday. However, that didn’t happen, and it seems Tennessee might have back-to-back SEC Sixth Man of the Year winners.
