Tennessee football: 5 things Tee Martin brings to Vols as assistant coach
Tennessee football is bringing Tee Martin home. Here are five things the Volunteers national championship quarterback brings as a head coach.
After numerous previous efforts, Jeremy Pruitt got the job done. Tee Martin is finally coming home to be a coach for Tennessee football. The return of the national championship quarterback means a lot of things for the Vols.
Yes, considering the fact that he was just fired from the USC Trojans, there is reason for concern when you look at this from a purely coaching perspective. However, Martin was fired as the offensive coordinator after being demoted earlier in the year. He’s not going to be a coordinator on Rocky Top.
As a position coach, he brings a ton of valuable assets to the Tennessee football program. Don’t forget that he was considered a rising star in the industry just prior to the start of the 2017 season. The things that made people tout him didn’t all of a sudden just disappear.
It’s worth noting that Martin had options. So even though he chose to come back home, he didn’t have to. Remember, he turned down the Vols once before to stay in his same position role, and that turned out to be smart considering that Butch Jones was the one hiring him.
The ironic thing is Martin comes after the Vols hired Jim Chaney as offensive coordinator, and Chaney replaced Tyson Helton, who worked as USC’s passing game coordinator when Martin was their offensive coordinator. So there are lots of connections here, and Martin can help in many ways.
With 11 staff members following the hire of Martin, the Vols are going to have to get rid of somebody, but multiple people are drawing interest elsewhere. Pruitt, meanwhile, hit one out of the park to bring in Martin as a position coach.
Now that he’s back on Rocky Top, let’s fully analyze Martin the coach. And we can note that there are lots of positive things to mention. These are five valuable assets the former Vol brings to Tennessee football as an assistant.
