Jauan Jennings returning to the Tennessee Vols and the reported hire of Tee Martin lead our Volunteers news for Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2019.

What a huge news day! The Tennessee Vols already had a lot to celebrate with the Duke Blue Devils losing Monday night because that made the chance to reach No. 1 much more clear. However, things only got better with the evening.

Our morning update on Rocky Top leads with two people who will be part of the Tennessee football program next year, both of which make great news for UT. We also have a men’s basketball press conference to cover along with rankings.

Then there’s a basketball preview along with a recap of a women’s sport from the other day as well. So that makes for a huge news day. Let’s start with the great news surrounding Jeremy Pruitt the football program.

Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jauan Jennings announced he’ll return for his senior season in 2019. Jennings was a four-star quarterback when Butch Jones recruited him in 2015, but he switched over to receiver that year and became the No. 2 wideout in 2016. In 2017, he took a redshirt after a season-ending injury and returned in 2018. He made his announcement on Instagram. Here’s part of it.

"This has been a long journey coming, and I am Tremendously anxious to get back to work with my brothers! Forever I bleed Orange #GBO"

Tee Martin returning to coach UT – Chris Low, ESPN

The Tennessee Vols are bringing back their national championship quarterback from 1998. Tee Martin will team up with Jeremy Pruitt as an assistant on the UT staff this year. He comes to Knoxville from the USC Trojans, where he was hired by Lane Kiffin in 2012 and retained by Steve Sarkisian and Clay Helton. What he will coach was unclear Tuesday morning.

"In 2017, Martin was a semifinalist for the Broyles Award as the top assistant coach in college football. He is widely recognized as one of the best recruiters in the country."

Tennessee basketball still No. 3 – Mike Wilson, Knoxville News Sentinel

The Tennessee Vols men’s basketball team remained No. 3 in both polls Monday after road wins over the Missouri Tigers and Florida Gators last week. In the AP Poll, they were behind the No. 1 ranked Duke Blue Devils and No. 2 ranked Michigan Wolverines. However, they were behind the No. 1 ranked Duke Blue Devils and No. 2 ranked Virginia Cavaliers in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll. Should they win both games this week, at home against the Arkansas Razorbacks and Alabama Crimson Tide, they’ll likely move up to No. 2 after Duke losing at home to the Syracuse Orange Monday night.

"Before this season, Tennessee had spent three weeks in program history ranked in the top three of the AP poll. All three came in the 2007-08 season.Tennessee reached the No. 3 ranking this season after beating then-No. 1 Gonzaga in early December. The Vols haven’t lost since then, holding the spot throughout the remainder of the month."

Rick Barnes speaks to media Monday – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

Tennessee Vols men’s basketball head coach Rick Barnes spoke with the media on Monday afternoon. He addressed his team doing the Gator Chomp, which he said he understood but didn’t like. Barnes talked about Jordan Bowden’s play and his role, noted that Lamonte Turner is 100 percent now conditioning wise but still getting back into a rhythm, emphasized the need for consistency from Jordan Bone and touched on Grant Williams’s issues with foul trouble.

"“You just want to stay focused on the main thing. I will give the guys credit for that, because I do think we’ve done a good job with that. Could we do better? Yes. But overall they’ve done a good job focused on what’s at hand.”"
