The Tennessee Vols picking up a football transfer while the Lady Volunteers lose a fourth straight game lead our UT news for Friday, Jan. 18, 2019.

Happy Friday to Vol Nation. Well, it’s happy Friday unless your Holly Warlick and the women’s basketball team, who get the rare opportunity to lead off our Tennessee Vols news. Unfortunately for them, it’s bad news.

Our morning report on Rocky Top leads with a rare four-game losing streak by the Lady Vols after a horrendous showing Thursday night. Sure, it’s a standard recap, but it’s a news story that simply can’t be ignored.

Then we go to football news. It may be rare to have football play second fiddle to women’s basketball in news coverage, but that’s where we are today. The football news involves another assistant coach and the pickup of a transfer. But let’s start with our Lady Vols recap.

Tennessee football expected to land transfer – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

The Tennessee Vols football team is expected to land Georgia Bulldogs transfer Deangelo Gibbs, who left the program back on Dec. 19. Gibbs was a four-star safety in the 2017 recruiting class and is the cousin of UT safety Nigel Warrior and nephew of UT legend Dale Carter. He will likely have to sit out in 2018 due to NCAA transfer eligibility rules.

"Sources described Tennessee as the fresh start Gibbs was looking for, thanks in large part to Pruitt, who was the primary recruiter for Gibbs while working at Alabama as defensive coordinator. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Gibbs, from Oxford, Ga., and a product of Grayson High School, played in seven games for Georgia last season, finishing with seven tackles. He played in six games and had three tackles as a freshman in 2017."

Football assistant leaving for NFL – Dan Harralson, VolsWire.com

Tennessee Vols football assistant coach John Lilly is reportedly leaving for the NFL. Lilly has served as assistant to the head coach under Jeremy Pruitt, but sources say he is joining Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens in the NFL to coach tight ends. Kitchens served as interim head coach for the Browns this past year before being named head coach after the season ended.

"Kitchens played quarterback at Alabama and was teammates with Jeremy Pruitt from 1995-96.Lilly served as tight ends coach at Georgia when Pruitt was defensive coordinator for the Bulldogs from 2014-15."
