December 5, 1998 – (SEC Championship)

Georiga Dome; Atlanta, Georgia

Tee Martin had led the Vols to an undefeated regular season full up lucky breaks and pure domination. Tennessee was looking to be crowned as SEC Champions in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1989-90.

If Tee was going to be a Tennessee legend he had to beat a Mississippi State team that was riding a three-game winning streak that included wins over Alabama, Arkansas, and Ole Miss. The 1998 State team wasn’t a joke; they had a great defense that was going to cause a tough test for Martin and the Vols offense. The Bulldogs defense gave up six points or less in five games with two shutouts on the season.

If you loved defensive football, you enjoyed the 1998 SEC Championship Game. Tennessee was leading 10-7 heading into the fourth quarter where neither team could get anything going offensively.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Vols needed something to happen down 14-10. That’s when Martin pulled a little magic out of nowhere by accounting for two touchdown passes within 32 seconds of game action to ultimately seal the deal for a National Championship berth.
