September 4, 1999
Neyland Stadium; Knoxville, Tennessee
Just like the Houston Cougars from a season ago, the Wyoming Cowboys didn’t have a chance to open the 1999 season with a win. Tennessee came into the game ranked No.2 in the land after winning a National Championship a few short months before.
There were high expectations set for Martin in his second season as a starter, and he didn’t disappoint.
One of the things that made Martin such a good quarterback was his ability to run when plays would break down. He wasn’t Michael Vick, but he was dangerous with his legs. He only rushed for 36 yards against the Cowboys, but it was always to open up the passing game.
Martin only threw 21 times but completed 14 for 264 yards with two touchdowns.
The 42-point performance got the Vols off on the right foot to repeat as College Football Champions. They won six of the next seven days. However, they did lose the very next game to the Florida Gators by two points.
42 points ended up being the second most points scored during the season; the most was against Kentucky when Tee Martin led the Vols to a 56-21 win.
