November 6, 1999

Neyland Stadium; Knoxville, Tennessee

It isn’t often that two storied programs such as Tennessee and Notre Dame get together. So, the game was a massive deal in 1999, and it was a big deal for Tee Martin.

  • Before the game on November 6, the two teams met in 1991 when the Vols took 35-34 win. Could they do it again with Martin and company?

Luckily for the Vols, they had a really good team and Notre Dame was unranked coming into Knoxville. Tee Martin took advantage of their lousy defense.

Martin was fantastic all game long and finished 18-of-32 for 196 yards. It was a bit unusual for the Vols to pass over 30 times, but Martin did throw three touchdowns and rushed for another one.

Losing to the Vols set the wheels in motion for an absolutely horrific ending to Notre Dame’s season. Tee Martin led the charge for the 38-14 drumming that began a four-game losing streak for the Fighting Irish that included losses to Pittsburgh, Boston College, and Stanford.

Many people will forget just how good Martin was against the Fighting Irish because at the end of the day it wasn’t that important of a game. However, his four touchdown performance was one of the best games he played in a Tennessee jersey.
