Tennessee basketball: Grant Williams broke records in this week review
No.2 – Vols hold a 4-1 record against the Big 12
If you’re a fan of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, then you’re in luck. The two conferences signed a renewal for six additional years. The Big 12 took the crown this season 6-4, but that has more to do with the SEC not letting their best teams participate to be “fair” to all the teams in the conference.
For example, the worst five teams in the league according to conference record played in the Challenge this season while Auburn, Mississippi State, and LSU who are all ranked in the Top-25 had to sit out.
While the SEC as a whole dropped the ball, Tennessee did not. The Vols took care of business against West Virginia and moved their overall record in the challenge to 4-1. That just so happens to be the best winning percentage in the conference.
2017-18 vs. Iowa State
Tennessee was playing good basketball coming off two straight wins over South Carolina and Vanderbilt. However, a trip to Ames, Iowa wasn’t going to be easy, or at least that’s what we all thought. Lamonte Turner ended up scoring 20 points off the bench on 7-for-13 from the floor, including 6-for-9 from deep. Vols won 68-45.
2016-17 vs. Kansas State
The Vols were coming off a two-point upset over the No.4 Kentucky Wildcats. They took that momentum to Kansas State with Grant Williams scoring a team-high 17 points in a 70-58 win.
2015-16 vs. TCU
Tennessee came out looking for a win to jumpstart their season. Losers of four of their last six games, a win against TCU would have gone a long way. Kevin Punter’s game-high 24 points weren’t enough to overcome a late rally from the Horned Frogs who ended up winning 75-63.
2014-15 vs. Kansas State
Tennessee’s first opportunity to participate in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge saw a matchup against the Kansas State Wildcats. Josh Richardson led the way scoring 17 points in 36 minutes of action. Vols won in a one-point thriller 65-64.
