Tennessee football has had many legendary Super Bowl performers over the years, but Malik Jackson has had undisputedly the best performance of any former Vol, losing or winning, in the Super Bowl the past decade. He joined Britton Colquitt as former Vols to help deliver Peyton Manning his final Super Bowl Championship.
Had it not been for Von Miller’s amazing game, Jackson may have been the guy to win Super Bowl MVP in this game. He had to convert to nose tackle at the start of the year in Wade Phillips’s new 3-4 system and managed to become a star in doing so.
This was the game that got him his payday with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jackson had five solo tackles, a tackle for a loss, and a hit on Cam Newton that clearly rattled him. But most importantly, he achieved a very rare feat in the Super Bowl.
Jackson scored a defensive touchdown. Up 3-0 in the first quarter, Miller and the Broncos strip-sacked Newton. The ball rolled into the end zone, and Jackson recovered for the touchdown. He was recovering fumbles before Derek Barnett was. That was the key play of the game, and Jackson had a huge role in it.
On top of that, the elite rush the Brocnos had all night came from Jackson getting a huge push up front. He was a superstar in this game and proved himself to be one of the elite defensive linemen in football. As a result, it was easy for us to put him at the top of this list. He, like Colquitt, made sure Rocky Top’s favorite son, the Sheriff, rode off into the sunset with a Super Bowl ring.
