5. No new wide receivers will commit.

Tennessee football is looking at numerous athletes and wide receivers to try to diversify its skill position need for the 2019 recruiting class. It makes sense. After all, the Vols’ top two receivers this upcoming year, Marquez Callaway and Jauan Jennings, will both be seniors.

On top of that, they still haven’t found a reliable slot guy, Jim Chaney is very limited for the future. Four-star wide receiver Ramel Keyton and three-star wide receiver Jerrod Means are the only two current commitments at the position, and you need more guys at receiver to find the right fits.

But the Vols won’t get anybody else in this class. Guys like Dywan Griffin could be a steal, and UT is the only major program offering him. He’s going to look somewhere safer, though, where he knows he can play.

Alante Brown and JD Martin are two athletes they are also looking at who could stretch the field with speed at receiver, and then there’s the off-chance that decommit Cameron Wynn recommits AND ends up playing offense. It’s likely none of this happens, though.

As a result, Jeremy Pruitt and Jim Chaney had better hope they did their due diligence on the two receivers who did commit because that’s all they’ve got for the future. Maybe Tee Martin can do a good job coaching them up. But this is one big negative that’s going to come out of this class. At this point, they may want to redshirt Brandon Johnson just to have some depth for 2020.
