No.3 – Shooting percentage from the floor

It feels like the Vols are horrible defensively just watching a few games this season. There were a few games where I thought the Vols were going to get beat frankly because the other team wasn’t missing any shots.

  • In the 2017-18 season, Tennessee let teams shoot over 50 percent from the floor in 14 games. Before looking at the research, I guessed that correlated with a losing record. I was wrong.

However, the 8-6 record while allowing teams to shoot 50 percent or better from the floor wasn’t good.

What a difference just five percent made last season. When Tennessee held teams under 45 percent from the floor in 16 games with an overall record of 15-1, their lone loss came against Georiga down in Athens. The Bulldogs shot 42.4 percent.

I understand there is more basketball left to play, however this season Tennessee has only allowed four teams shoot over 50 percent from the floor. The Vols hold a 3-1 record, obviously with their loss coming at the hands of Kansas when they shot a near 60 percent.

When the Vols hold teams to 40 percent or under from the floor, they hold an 8-0 record. The closest win came down in Gainesville against the Florida Gators.
