Tennessee football: What went wrong for Vols on National Signing Day 2019?
1. Florida and Georgia finish with more successful recruiting classes.
The Alabama Crimson Tide finished with one of the the best recruiting classes in Nick Saban’s history in Tuscaloosa. Although they play the Tide every year, that’s not as bad of news for Tennessee football. After all, the two teams are in separate divisions.

But the Florida Gators under Dan Mullen and the Georgia Bulldogs under Kirby Smart both got better classes than the Vols too, and after already having better teams last year, that really sets Jeremy Pruitt’s program back. How are they supposed to compete?
Pruitt, with Jim Chaney as his offensive coordinator, bases his entire program on having better talent than other teams. Meanwhile, Dan Mullen is a guy who gets the right fit to run his spread offense. He found the right fit and managed to get a Top 10 class.
Georgia simply followed up on the greatest recruiting class in NCAA history to have a No. 1 class on Rivals again after a huge National Signing Day. The George Pickens flip, a five-star wide receiver from the Auburn Tigers the Vols thought they would get, was devastating. He went to the Dawgs to help that class reach No. 1.
The Dawgs are now loaded, and Florida already had better talent and a more exciting scheme than the Vols. So with both of those combined with Alabama having a better class, it doesn’t even matter that the Vols are in the Top 12.
Simply put, Tennessee football wants to compete in the SEC East. There’s no way they can do that if they keep having non-Top 10 classes when you look at the way Georgia is recruiting. As a result, the Vols are going to struggle again in the East this year. Jeremy Pruitt needs a big season to step up his recruiting if they want to return to what they once were.
