Justin Martin is one of the most purely athletic players Tennessee football ever had. He often times bit on plays and was out of position with the Vols, which cost him in the NFL. But he was athletic enough in college to recover quickly.

In the AAF, Martin is the perfect type of defensive back. He won’t be able to cover just any wide receiver in the league, but with so many coaches trying to spread out the defenses, speed guys are who the defensive coordinators want.
Provided Martin can stay healthy, that gives him a great chance to be very effective in this league. He’s meant to cover a team coached by Steve Spurrier or Mike Riley. Martin on a slot guy or covering a hot route is perfect.
The good news for Martin is also that among all nine defensive backs on the roster, he’s one of only three with experience playing Power Five football. Two others played at the Group of Five level, but four came from FCS play.
As a result, Martin should be able to make a huge impact on the team pretty early on. Dennis Thurman doesn’t use as many complexities on the back end of his defense, so Martin should have enough chances to be very successful.
