Tennessee football recruiting: Ranking position groups of Vols 2019 class with grades
1. Secondary
Recruiting grade: A
Tennessee football didn’t have a five-star commitment in the secondary. To be honest, that’s the only reason this group didn’t get an A+. The star ratings have to count for something. But it was still an amazing group.

The Vols lost Todd Kelly Jr., D.J. Henderson and Micah Abernathy from last year’s team. The main contributors they’ll lose after this year are Nigel Warrior, Marquill Osborne and Baylen Buchanan. So yes, Jeremy Pruitt had work to do here.
He did just that. Pruitt secured the commitment of six defensive backs. Three of them, Warren Burrell, Jaylen McCollough and Tyus Fields are all four-stars. Then there’s three-star athlete Aaron Beasley, a hard-hitter who will play safety, and three-star Signing Day pickup Kenney Solomon.
Meanwhile, the Vols got three-star Anthony Harris to commit, but he wasn’t able to sign yet. Still, he’s on the roster, and with six guys like these guys, the unit is in great shape for the future when it comes to depth.
Remember, the Vols’ two primary starters last year at cornerback were both freshmen in Bryce Thompson and Alontae Taylor. Trevon Flowers was a utility player. And sophomore Theo Jackson was a huge playmaker on the team. All four of those guys will be back for 2020.
With this new collection of guys, Tennessee football now has a ton of options at defensive back. Add in the fact that coaching such a unit is Pruitt’s speciality, and fans should be extremely happy with the recruiting class here. Weighing the needs against the commitments, it’s definitely the best overall unit for the Vols’ 2019 class.
