9. Wide Receivers

Recruiting grade: C-

On the surface, Tennessee football wasn’t horrible with wide receivers. After all, they secured a commitment from four-star prospect Ramel Keyton and three-star prospect Jerrod Means. That’s not bad overall.

However, it wouldn’t be close to an A on the surface. You would have to make a case for it to be a B with just those two guys. We are giving it a C- and being generous in the process when you break everything down.

The Vols have four seniors at wide receiver this year, including their starting wideouts in Marquez Callaway and Jauan Jennings along with one of the guys in potential to start in the slot for them, Tyler Byrd. Then there’s Brandon Johnson, who’s going to be gone as well unless he takes a redshirt. Simply put, they need a lot of help for 2020.

As a result, having only two commitments at the position was problematic. Now, if they both work out, then the Vols could be in solid shape by 2020 with Josh Palmer and Jordan Murphy still on the roster. But that’s a big IF.

Receivers usually need to come in bunches because it’s hard to project who will work out there. As a result, the Vols did not come through at this position, and considering the needs, it’s the worst result for any unit on this list. Jeremy Pruitt has a lot of work to do here for his next recruiting class if he wants to make sure this position isn’t a problem in the future.
