Tennessee football recruiting: Ranking position groups of Vols 2019 class with grades

7. Quarterbacks

Recruiting grade: B-

One three-star commitment at quarterback would not seem to warrant a B- grade. That should be a C and maybe even lower considering the fact that Tennessee football was only able to get one player to commit.

However, the Vols are in solid shape right now at the position. Jarrett Guarantano will only be a junior heading into 2019, and JT Shrout is still on the roster. So with three-star quarterback Brian Maurer, Jeremy Pruitt has three pro-style guys with big arms.

This is consistent with what the Vols always know they need to do, which is get one quarterback commitment a recruiting class. Maurer is a guy who brings as much to the table and will legitimately compete for the second-string job.

Like Shrout, he is a guy with way more potential than his star rating shows. Both guys have big arms and are a perfect fit not only for what Pruitt wants to do but for what Jim Chaney likes to work with as well.

The 6’4″ Ocala, Fla. prospect already brings good size, and he’s actually very mobile as well. Shrout has the bigger arm while Maurer, still with a big arm, has a bit less strength and brings more mobility to the position.

As a result, the Vols have a collection of pro-style quarterbacks with diverse skills, and this commitment alone put the roster in good shape at quarterback. That’s why we have no problem, with just that one commitment, giving the recruiting grade a B-.
