Tennessee football recruiting: Ranking position groups of Vols 2019 class with grades
5. Running Backs
Recruiting grade: B
This is a classic case of being in good shape at a position and adding a guy only improving it more. Tennessee football was already set at running back with Ty Chandler being the best offensive playmaker last year, Jeremy Banks having the potential to be the power back, and Tim Jordan able to be effective.
All three guys are going to be factors this year, and Jeremy Pruitt could add Carlin Fils-Aime as well if he stays at running back. That’s a great collection already, and all of those guys are juniors or sophomores going forward.
However, Pruitt outdid himself by adding four-star running back Eric Gray. An all-purpose back out of Memphis, the 5’10” 185-pound prospect is the perfect replacement for Chandler if he wants to leave early after this year. The addition of Gray sets the Vols up for running back at least through 2021.
That alone should make this a B. But then, to solidify it, there’s Quavaris Crouch. Now, it’s likely he plays linebacker in college. But Crouch is a four-star athlete who was the best player in the nation before he got hurt, limiting his play late in his junior and throughout his senior seasons.
Crouch, at 6’3″ 222 pounds, could be the power back to replace Banks if Banks stays at linebacker full-time. This is what spring ball is all about, and it’s worth paying attention to what happens with both of them. But Crouch assures that this unit is okay.
