4. Linebackers

Recruiting grade: B+

With the departure of Quart’e Sapp and Darrin Kirkland Jr. and Daniel Bituli entering their senior seasons, Tennessee football had a lot of work to do at linebacker for the future. Things could have gotten rough in 2020. This is specifically for inside linebacker, as edge rushers are usually defensive ends.

Shanon Reid, Will Ignont and JJ Peterson are all in the rotation for the Vols after Kirkland and Bituli leave. At least one of them is bound to step up and make an impact, maybe even two of them. That gives Jeremy Pruitt something to work with. But with what he was able to get for the Vols’ 2019 class, they are set for a while.

The most notable commitment is Henry To’oto’o. A four-star linebacker out of Northern California, To’oto’o shocked the world with his commitment to Rocky Top over the Alabama Crimson Tide on Natonial Signing Day. He made this grade a B+.

Before that, the Vols did have a commitment from four-star Quavaris Crouch, whom we already mentioned as a running back. The 6’3″ 222-pound athlete is also a linebacker and would’ve been a five-star were it not for injuries, so he is a huge addition there. Linebacker is likely where he’s going to play in college.

Those two guys entering the program with the three already there have set this program up for the future at linebacker. Pruitt had the biggest score of anybody on Signing Day with To’oto’o’s commitment, and that’s why this grade is a B+.
