2. Offensive Linemen

Recruiting grade: A

By many metrics, this class could be an A+. It was by far the strongest unit of the Vols’ 2019 recruiting class specifically, and Jeremy Pruitt deserves a ton of credit for all the guys he was able to get to commit.

  • Tennessee football secured five offensive linemen, three of whom were four-stars and one of whom was a five-star on Rivals. Another of the four-stars, Wanya Morris, was a five-star on Rivals before the 2019 season began, and he remained that across other services.

Darnell Wright, who remained a five-star, committed on National Signing Day. Add in four-stars Chris Akporoghene and Jackson Lampley along with three-star Melvin McBride, and this class was super loaded.

However, we couldn’t give it an A+. For one, you definitively need two five-stars in an offensive line class to get that grade. On top of that, the Vols’ needs at offensive line are so great that we can’t just give credit to them for this class on paper.

Last year, the Vols had one of the worst offensive lines in history. To compound matters, Chance Hall gave up football this offseason, Drew Richmond is transferring, and Trey Smith, the best lineman on the team, is still out due to blood clots. As a result, Pruitt’s loading up on the offensive line was a necessity more than anything.

Still, you can’t ignore how things turned out on the trail. Five commitments and so much potential among them should allow for the Vols to have a solid collection of guys to build around, and it gives Pruitt and Jim Chaney numerous options for the future. So we still give this class an A.
