3. Moving Chris Weinke to quarterbacks coach

This is a gigantic improvement. Chris Weinke is a former Heisman Trophy winner and national championship quarterback who took the Florida State Seminoles to back to back national championship games. He then spent seven years as a backup in the NFL, became an NFL quarterbacks coach, and was also a high school head coach.

Add in the fact that he was an offensive analyst working under Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide, and everything about him says he should be coaching quarterbacks despite his experience at other positions. As a result, moving him there is huge for Tennessee football.

Now, to be fair, Tyson Helton was qualified to as a quarterbacks coach. But the Vols improved here largely by moving Weinke to a position he was much more qualified for. We’re comparing this against where he was coaching before.

Working with Weinke should be of great help to Jarrett Guarantano, JT Shrout and Brian Maurer. Weinke spent time with Mike Groh while in the NFL, which should give him a deep understanding of how to utilize the passing game in a pro-style offense. His experience playing at all levels and coaching at all levels is a huge deal.

On top of that, the guy is just able to bring championship experience to the quarterbacks. That’s always a major positive, and it’s what puts him at No. 3 on this list. It also is a bit plus for the next guy we have on this list.
