My instincts tell me that Chris Weinke will shoot up this list soon enough. On paper, you can’t have a more qualified quarterbacks. Weinke is a Heisman Trophy winning national championship quarterback who played for Bobby Bowden and the Florida State Seminoles.

He then spent seven years as a backup NFL quarterback and has been an NFL quarterbacks coach, a college offensive analyst, a college running backs coach and a high school head coach in Florida. Taking all this into account, Weinke brings experience and keeps his major recruiting connections as he moves over to quarterbacks coach for Tennessee football.

The running back play was suspect to a degree last year, largely when it came to issues of holding onto the ball. But things like vision and shiftiness were never better, and those are things that Weinke was coaching as the running backs coach. Incorporating them into the passing game is also a credit to them.

As a result, Weinke’s ability to coach vision could make him a huge plus at quarterback. The only problem is he has no proven track record, yet, of coaching quarterbacks at the college level. So we have to keep him down here for now. But expect him to shoot up the list soon enough. He’s just too perfect on paper for this move not to work out under Jeremy Pruitt.
