Eric Gray is the heir apparent to Ty Chandler as the athletic speed back for Tennessee football, and as a result, his commitment to the Vols is another huge in-state pickup. He has helped to set the Vols up for the future there. In 2019, Gray could have multiple opportunities to play.

Even with Tim Jordan and Jeremy Banks on the roster, he’s a threat to get into the rotation, especially if Chandler gets hurt. And the coaches will definitely give him a look on special teams as a returner. As a result, he’s higher on the list than other people we named with something to gain this spring.

However, there are a couple of reasons enrolling in the spring don’t give him as much to gain as other people on this list. For starters, there’s not much development needed if you’re a speed back or a returner. You just need to be able to make people miss in open space, and showing that in Fall camp would have done the same thing.

On top of that, though, Gray is still buried in the depth chart at this moment, and if Chandler stays healthy, there’s nothing he can do to win playing time this year. So that’s the main reason we have him close to the bottom.
