Tennessee Vols basketball coach Rick Barnes’s comments on beating the Mississippi State Bulldogs leads our Volunteers news for Wednesday, March 6, 2019.

The Tennessee Vols had an emotional night in Knoxville, and that’s obviously going to be the top story of the day. However, the emotions weren’t all good, which makes this morning report more interesting than most.

Our updates on Rocky Top start off with the good news, which was a huge men’s basketball Senior Night win. Another report, though, involves a protest related to recent racial incidents that has been picked up by national media.

There are other things to discuss too, including the women’s basketball team meeting with the media Tuesday ahead of the SEC Tournament and a recap of another baseball win. But let’s start with the big Tuesday night news.

The No. 5 ranked Tennessee Vols men’s basketball team dominated the Mississippi State Bulldogs 71-54 on Senior Night Tuesday to remain tied for first place in the SEC with the LSU Tigers, who face the Florida Gators on the road Wednesday. With the win, UT improved to 27-3 and 15-2 in the SEC, and they have one game left at the Auburn Tigers. Mississippi State fell to 21-9 and 9-8 in the SEC. Here’s a bit of what Rick Barnes said after the game.

"“I know where we started four years ago, and those guys should be really proud of what they’ve helped create here. Should they be emotional? Yeah, why not? Because they’re put their heart and soul into it.”"

Tennessee students protest during Senior Night game – ESPN.com

Dozens of University of Tennessee students protested during the Vols’ win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs Tuesday night after a recent racially charged incident. Last week, a Snapchat image showed four people who appeared to be UT students, two of whom were in blackface, with a caption that said, “We for racial equality boys. Bout to get this free college now that I’m black let’s gooooo #blacklivesmatter.” While the school is still figuring out how to address the issue, students protested that event in response during Tuesday’s game.

"The students, dressed in black and stationed behind the Tennessee basket during the first half, remained seated during the national anthem with fists raised. They chanted several anti-racism slogans during the game, before quietly walking out early in the second half, again with fists raised."

Lady Vols meet with media Tuesday – UTSports

The Tennessee women’s basketball team met with media members Tuesday ahead of the Wednesday start of the SEC Tournament in Greenville, S.C. Tennessee will face the LSU Tigers on Thursday. Here’s a bit of what Holly Warlick said.

"“We’ve got to win a basketball game, and they’re intelligent kids, and they know we need to win. We needed to win at Ole Miss too, so they made it a priority. And I think they’re pretty focused and ready to get down there and ready to start playing.”"

Tennessee baseball defeats Troy – Dan Harralson, VolsWire.com

The Tennessee Vols baseball team moved to 13-0 on Tuesday after a huge 11-2 win over the Troy Trojans at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. With the win, this is the best start in school history.

"UT’s Sean Hunley pitched five innings, giving up five hits, two earned runs, two walks and striking out two. Hunley recorded his third win of the season."
