No.5 – First title since 1998

What seems like forever ago, the last time the Vols won a national championship in football or basketball was the 1998 season, 20 years ago. Tennessee legend, Phillip Fulmer led the Tennessee football Volunteers to an undefeated season with wins over Florida, Florida State, Arkansas, Georiga, and Syracuse.

Keeping things on the basketball court though, there have been a lot of great players to put on the orange and white jersey. Along with the great players, there have been outstanding teams.

However, a National Championship never came. A Final Four never came. In fact, Tennessee was only able to reach the Elite Eight one time.

Despite not having any Final Four appearances, the Vols have had twelve 20-win seasons. Back in 2007-08 Tennessee won 31 games, which is the most in program history. With already 27 wins this season, Grant Williams and Admiral Schofield have the opportunity to rewrite history once again.

Let’s be honest. Knoxville is a football town. People will always talk about the magical 1998 season. That season will live on forever.

However, if the basketball Vols can win a National Championship, especially with this bunch of players, it would be just as sweet.
