Tennessee basketball: A look at the Vols road to the Final Four
No.11 Saint Mary’s Gaels (22-11)
Moraga, CA – West Coast Conference
Head coach: Randy Bennett
The Saint Mary’s Gaels pulled the unthinkable upset in the West Coast Conference Championship Games against the No.1 Gonzaga Bulldogs. Again, the Gaels and Vols would meet in the Sweet 16 if both teams reach that round.
Best win
Speaking of winning the West Coast Conference Tournament, there is no more significant win than beating the No.1 ranked team in the nation. But, what’s more impressive is how they did it. Gonzaga only scored 47 points. 47 points!
Worst loss
The worst loss came against the Pepperdine Waves on January 26th in overtime. St. Mary’s scored 77 points but shot just 21.9 percent on 7-for-32 from the three-point line.
Longest streak
The Gaels didn’t really have that long of a win streak. They sprinkled in a handful of four-game win streaks and a three-game win streak. But, the longest came near the end of the season where St. Mary’s reeled off five wins in a row.
What they do best
The trend continues, the Gaels are efficient on the offensive and defensive ends. They shoot the three-ball around 38 percent from deep.
