Tennessee basketball: A look at the Vols road to the Final Four
No.14 Old Dominion Monarchs (26-8)
Norfolk, VA – Conference USA
Head coach: Jeff Jones
Yes, it’s March and madness happens in March. But, let’s be real, there is a very slim chance the Monarchs of Old Dominion make it to the Sweet 16. Could it happen? Sure. Will it happen? Doubt it.
Best win
The Monarchs best win came on December 15th against the Syracuse Orange on the road. Old Dominion was able to hold Cuse to 62 points on 8-for-26 from the field and 8-for-22 from the three-point line. Syracuse even made more free throws (22) than Old Dominion attempted (20), and still lost.
Worst loss
It’s weird saying Northern Iowa was the worst loss considering the recent success the Panthers have had in the big dance. But, at 16-18 on the season, this wasn’t the same team.
Old Dominion scored just 53 points by shooting 29.2 percent from the three-point line and 66.7 from the charity stripe in a 54-53 loss.
Longest streak
After a 2-3 record through the first five games, Old Dominion went on an eight-game win streak with wins over two NCAA Tournament teams in VCU and Syracuse.
What they do best
This is the first team that the Vols could play that aren’t great on the offensive end. In fact, they rank near the bottom of the country. However, their defense is excellent. They rank 7th in two-point field percentage defense at holding teams to 42.5 percent.
