Tennessee Vols senior forward Admiral Schofield talking about the men’s basketball NCAA Tournament leads our Volunteers news for Wednesday, March 20, 2019.

Happy first day of spring! It truly is that exciting time of the year as the sun fights to come out and March Madness takes hold. It began with the first round of play-in games on Tuesday, and Tennessee Vols fans have a lot to look forward to in this year’s tournament.

Our morning update on Rocky Top leads with more coverage surrounding the Big Dance on the men’s side. An interview done with one of the key players is the top story. But it’s not the only men’s basketball story.

We also have coverage of another Vol being a finalist for another award. Then we have baseball and softball recaps and softball and swimming and diving previews. With one of those, you’ll see basketball isn’t the only sport with postseason implications. But it is where we start.

Admiral Schofield talks about NCAA Tournament – Wes Rucker, GoVols247

Tennessee Vols men’s basketball senior forward Admiral Schofield did an exclusive interview with GoVols247 that was published on Tuesday to talk about the NCAA Tournament. Here’s a bit of what he said about the pressure, or lack thereof, in the Big Dance.

"“There’s no pressure at this point. It’s either you do it, or you don’t. It’s just as simple as that. It’s really really now.”"

Grant Williams a finalist for Citizen Naismith Trophy – NaismithTrophy.com

Tennessee basketball junior forward Grant Williams has been named one of four finalists for the Citizen Naismith Trophy, which goes to the nation’s most outstanding player. The other contenders are Zion Williamson of the Duke Blue Devils, Ja Morant of the Murray State Racers and Rui Hachimura of the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

"“The four finalists have displayed all the talent and dedication necessary to take home the Citizen Naismith Trophy, and if selected, they would join an elite group of college basketball players stretching back more than 50 years,” said Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club. “We look forward to watching each of these players lead their teams in the tournament as they compete for both the championship and the Men’s Player of the Year honor.”"

Tennessee baseball defeats ETSU – Dan Harralson, VolsWire.com

The Tennessee Vols baseball team rebounded from being swept by the Auburn Tigers to win a midweek road game against the East Tennessee State Buccaneers. Pitcher Will Heflin got the win to move to 2-0 on the year.

"The Vols (18-4) defeated ETSU, 5-1. Tennessee will host South Carolina starting Friday for a weekend series."

Tennessee softball beats Liberty, moving onto UNC – UTSports

The No. 5 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols softball team improved to 23-4 on the year after a 1-0 victory over the Liberty Flames on the road Tuesday. They will take the field on the road again Wednesday, this time against the North Carolina Tar Heels on the road. That game has been moved up to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. In Tuesday’s game, senior Matty Moss got the win to move to 8-1 on the year after pitching for 5 innings. Ashley Rogers pitched the final two innings to get her second save of the season.

"Offensively, the Lady Vols were led by seniors Jenna Holcomb (2-for-3) and Haley Bearden (1-for-3, 1 RBI). Both teams were held scoreless until the fourth inning when Tennessee scored the lone run of the game on Bearden’s eighth home run of the season."

Swimming and Diving to begin NCAA ChampionshipsNCAA.com

The Tennessee women’s swimming and diving team will begin competing in NCAA Championships on Wednesday. They have ten swimmers who have qualified individually for championships and four others who are members of relay teams.

"A total of 281 swimmers and 41 divers will compete in the 2019 women’s swimming and diving national championships at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas from March 20-23, 2019. ESPN will provide live linear coverage for both Friday and Saturday finals on ESPNU, as well as digital coverage on ESPN3 for Wednesday and Thursday evening finals."
