The Tennessee Lady Volunteers will take on the UCLA Bruins in the first round of the women’s basketball NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

Their streak remains alive. After an embarrassing regular season, the Tennessee Lady Vols still managed to make it into the NCAA Tournament and keep up their mark as a program that has never missed the Big Dance.

But they are a No. 11 seed. And on Saturday, to open women’s basketball March Madness, they have a major test. Holly Warlick’s team will begin by facing the No. 6 seed UCLA Bruins in the first round of the Albany region.

The two are playing in a bracket in College Park, hosted by the No. 3 seed Maryland Terrapins. Whichever team wins between Tennessee and UCLA will face the winner between Maryland and the No. 14 seed Radford Highlanders, who play at 11 a.m. Saturday, on Tuesday. Here is everything you need to know about today’s Tennessee-UCLA matchup.

No. 6 seed UCLA Bruins vs. No. 11  seed Tennessee Lady Volunteers

Tennessee limps into the NCAA Tournament with a 19-12 record and only one win over a top 25 team all season. They suffered their worst loss in school history, falling at home to the 7-23 Vanderbilt Commodores, toward the end of the season. On top of that, they had their first losing record in regular season SEC play in school history at 7-9.

Then, in the SEC Tournament, the Lady Vols got blown out by the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the Quarterfinals. UCLA, meanwhile, enters with a 20-12 record. Like the Lady Vols, they lost to the Stanford Cardinal this year, and they did it twice.

As a result, this matchup could be more intriguing than you might think. Both are probably playing to lose to Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, but given UT’s rough season, winning a tournament game would be something nice for them.

The No. 1 seed in their region is the Louisville Cardinals, but those teams wouldn’t meet until the Elite Eight anyway. It would take a miracle for Tennessee to get that far. However, they do have a chance on Saturday, so keep an eye on what they do.
