Eliminated Would-be Candidates Part II (Should Not Hire)

These are candidates whose names have come up for the Tennessee Lady Vols but for a specific reason, they should not hire.

Brenda Freese, Maryland Terrapins

Brenda Freese has one national championship with the Maryland Terrapins because she’s a great recruiter. But it’s as easy to recruit at Tennessee because of the name anyway. And she can’t coach. So Rocky Top can do better. She also has a history of animosity with the Lady Vols program, including her “kiss the ring and bow down” quote which you can read about here.

Kelly Graves, Oregon Ducks

On paper, Kelly Graves is actually a great candidate. But this is going to be a bit controversial: the Tennessee Lady Vols should not hire a male head coach if they can afford to avoid it. The brand name is just too much for what the program represents. Since there are other, better candidates, they should pass up on Graves.

Jeff Walz, Louisville Cardinals

If Tennessee is going to need to avoid male coaches, they should definitely avoid Jeff Walz given the salary he commands. Sorry, but when you never paid Holly Warlick $700,000, how can you justify paying $1.3 million a male coach who hasn’t done nearly as much for Tennessee and has no national titles. That’s what it would take to lure Walz.

Tyler Summitt

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! Do I make myself clear? NO! It would be the grossest case of hiring an unqualified privileged person of all time.
