The Tennessee Vols continuing spring practice and Grant Williams making another All-American team lead our Volunteers news for Wednesday, April 3, 2019.

Spring weather is fighting its way to get here permanently, but the lingering effects of winter still won’t go away. Nonetheless, the Tennessee Vols football team is back at it with spring ball, and that is obviously going to be a big news story for us.

Our morning update on Rocky Top leads with another practice that took place Tuesday, one that was on the heels of the team’s first scrimmage. We also have another honor for Grant Williams to talk about, as he continues to rack up awards.

A baseball recap and a softball recognition are also in the works. So the major spring sports and two of the three major overall sports get some love on the news front today. Let’s start, though, with the football news.

Tennessee football holds Tuesday spring practice – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

On the heels of their first scrimmage Saturday, the Tennessee Vols football team held another practice Tuesday. Jeremy Pruitt praised the offensive line from the scrimmage in a post-practice media session, said freshman running back Eric Gray is limited due to a shoulder surgery, and noted that he had always planned to use Georgia transfer Deangelo Gibbs on both sides of the ball, at defensive back and receiver, during spring. Here’s a bit of what he said about the practice itself.

"“Today was not near what I was hoping. Defense was much better today. Offense started slow and got to respond better. Probably one of the first days all spring that I didn’t see us improve offensively, and we’ve got to fix that.”"

Tennessee Vols men’s basketball forward Grant Williams reached another honor Tuesday. The team’s leading scorer was named a first-team AP All-American along with Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett of the Duke Blue Devils, Ja Morant of the Murray State Racers, and Cassius Winston of the Michigan State Spartans.

"Duke’s Zion Williamson and R.J. Barrett are the second freshman teammates to earn first-team All-America honors."

Tennessee baseball beats Belmont – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols baseball team improved to 22-8 with another in-state home midweek victory on Tuesday. They defeated the Belmont Bruins 6-2 and will take the field again Friday, beginning a three-game home series with the No. 5 ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs.

"The Volunteers used seven pitchers on the night with Will Heflinearning his third win of the season after allowing just a single run on two hits in three innings of work. The one-two punch of Justin Ammons and Jay Charleston at the top of UT’s lineup sparked the offense. The duo combined for three hits, three runs, three RBI and three stolen bases on the night."

Ashley Rogers named pitcher of the week – SECSports.com

Tennessee Lady Vols softball’s Ashley Rogers was named SEC Pitcher of the week. The freshman was recognized for her role in racking up two wins over the Missouri Tigers this past weekend.

"Rogers pitched a one-hit, complete game in game two on Sunday, and came in relief Monday night in the third inning to toss 4.2 shutout frames to secure the win"
