No.2 – Defense by the numbers

5- percent: One of the best defensive games Tennessee played was against the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC season opener. The Vols held Georgia to 1-for-20 from the three-point line for a percentage of five percent.

9- opponents over 50 percent from inside the arc: Tennessee had a fantastic interior defense this past season which we will highlight later. However, in nine games the Vols gave up a two-point percentage of 50 percent or higher. They had a 5-4 record in those games with wins over Vanderbilt, Mississippi State Arkansas, Wake Forest, and Kentucky.

18- teams under three-point average (made): There was a lot of talk about how Tennesse’s three-point defense wasn’t great. And, that is a fair criticism. However, in 18 games the Vols held teams under their three-point average for made three’s.

35.9- percentage of points from the three-point line: Again, the Vols’ three-point percentage defense wasn’t great. The allowed opposing teams to get 35.9 percent of their points from the three-point line. Just for a point of reference, the Vols got 26.1 percent of there points from beyond the three-point line, and the national average was 32 percent.

44.7- two-point defense percentage: I know this is a larger number than others on the page by 44.7 percent on two-point defense is really good. In fact, it ranked inside the top-25 in the country.

237- three-point defense: The biggest number on the page and one of the biggest in the nation was the Vols’ three-point defense. Tennessee gave up 35.4 percent to opposing teams from deep which ranked near the bottom of the nation.
