Tennessee basketball: Player awards for the 2018-2019 season
No.5 – Lamonte Turner
Don’t give up award
No, Lamonte Turner didn’t have cancer, and I’m not using that comparison. However, at the 1993 ESPN ESPY’s (when it was worth watching) Jimmy Valvano gave a speech that anyone would have been smart to listen to and it appears as Turner did.
As he wrapped up one of the most beautiful speeches anyone has ever give, Jimmy V left everyone with words that should never be forgotten. “Don’t get up; don’t ever give up.”
He did just that. After coming back from a shoulder injury that sidelined Turner for nine games, the junior guard never gave up on his shot. And, it didn’t matter the situation.
Down 20, Lamonte was taking the shot. Down by two with Grant Williams having a great game, Lamonte was taking the shot. He wasn’t giving up.
There was a stretch of seven-games where Tennessee went 5-2, and Turner went 4-for-31, 12.9 percent from deep. But, he didn’t give up.
After shooting around 13 percent from deep in the previous four losses, Tennessee fans were thankful he didn’t give up against Kentucky in the SEC Tournament. With 30 seconds left and the Vols, down one point and Turner nailed a three-point jumper.
With Admiral Schofield graduating and Jordan Bone heading into the NBA Draft, Turner will have an opportunity to scored a lot of points next season.
