Tennessee football: Top 10 Vols who weren’t first round NFL Draft picks
One of the easiest calls Tennessee football fans ever made was the steal of Jason Witten by the Dallas Cowboys back in 2003. Witten was a breakout star for the Vols beginning in 2001 and showed how great he was as a tight end.
His first sign of greatness was carrying Alabama Crimson Tide players on receptions. Then he showed his speed by outrunning the Michigan Wolverines’ secondary for a touchdown in the Citrus Bowl. All the while, Witten proved his value as a run-blocker, and the former track star who initially wanted to play defensive end showed he had no weakness at tight end.
Well, Witten then went to the NFL, and he became the leader of the Dallas Cowboys. One of the greatest receiving tight ends of all time, Witten also remained a staple to block for the running game. This resulted in him making an amazing 11 Pro Bowls in 15 years with the program.
He retired after 2017, but he’s now coming back in hopes of helping Dak Prescott and co. make a Super Bowl run this year. Witten is everything you want in a player and a future Hall of Famer, and all people could claim him to be in 2003 was a lesser Jeremy Shockey, which is why he fell to the third round.
