Tennessee football recruiting: Vols make top 6 for 4-star 2020 DE
Tennessee football got solid news on the recruiting front Monday by making the top six for four-star 2020 Cincinnati, Ohio defensive end Darrion Henry.
After a weekend of very few headlines with the NFL Draft, Tennessee football is making a bit of a splash on the recruiting trail. No, they haven’t picked up any commitments yet. But the news was still impressive.
It started when 2020 four-star quarterback commit Harrison Bailey was invited to the Elite 11 Finals after winning the Charlotte regional quarterback MVP trophy at The Opening regional event. A day later, the Vols made a significant cut for another top player.
Darrion Henry, a strongside defensive end, trimmed his list to six schools, and Tennessee football was on there. A four-star on Rivals who ranks No. 4 at his position and No. 2 overall in the state, Henry announced his top six on Twitter.
As you can see, the Vols do have serious competition. They have to compete with two Ohio schools, the much better program at this moment in the Ohio State Buckeyes and his hometown school in the Cincinnati Bearcats. But their SEC rivals include the Georgia Bulldogs and LSU Tigers. And the Kentucky Wildcats, who were a top 25 team last year, are the other contending program.
Tennessee football is going to need to make a strong push for Henry, as future forecasts have him as almost a lock for Ohio State. But given the fact that the Buckeyes just switched coaches, LSU could be on the decline with Ed Orgeron, Cincinnati is not a Power Five program and the Vols still own Kentucky, they could move ahead of a lot of schools.
It’s likely all going to come down to what Jeremy Pruitt does this year. What’s clear, though, is he could use a talent like Henry. The guy is 6’5″ 265 pounds and has the potential to be an insane playmaker. After losing everybody on the defensive line from this past year, Pruitt still needs to shore up more depth there, even at end. Henry could do that and be a key player in the future.
