Tennessee football recruiting: Vols make top 10 for 4-star 2020 DT
Tennessee football made the cut for another 2020 prospect Monday. Four-star defensive tackle Jaquelin Roy of Louisiana put the Volunteers in his top 10.
Just a few hours after making the cut for one four-star defensive lineman, Tennessee football made the cut for another. This time, the prospect was Jaquelin Roy, a defensive tackle instead of a defensive end. Roy trimmed his list to 10 schools on Monday night, and the Vols were one of the teams to make the list. He made his announcement on Twitter.
A four-star on Rivals out of University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, La., Roy is a top 5 player in his state and nationally at his position. As you can see, Roy’s list is pretty clear. It’s SEC heavy with the exception of the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns, two Big 12 schools who build their programs of of lots of talent from SEC states.
Tennessee football is also in there with the Georgia Bulldogs, Ole Miss Rebels, Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida Gators, Texas A&M Aggies, Mississippi State Bulldogs, and his hometown school, the LSU Tigers. LSU is likely to be the biggest uphill climb for any school trying to secure Roy’s commitment, as all early predictions have him going there.
Roy is a bigger uphill climb overall for the Vols than Ohio defensive end Darrion Henry, who first announced UT had made the cut in his list Monday. That’s because although you could sell LSU being a program on the decline under Ed Orgeron, it’s hard to make that case for other schools.
Texas A&M is thriving and more on the rise than Tennessee football under Jimbo Fisher. Oklahoma just made the College Football Playoff for a second straight year. Georgia and Alabama continue to be at the top in the SEC. Florida and Mississippi State had great first years under their new head coaches. So, in reality, the Vols only have selling points against Ole Miss, LSU and Texas.
However, it’s good for Jeremy Pruitt and co. that they made the top 10 for this guy. At 6’4″ 310 pounds, Roy is the perfect type of player to play in Pruitt’s 3-4 scheme at defensive tackle. He could be dominant in the middle and would make an incredible impact. Perhaps with a strong season, maybe they could pull of an upset by getting this kid to commit.
