2020 point guard, Jalen Cone, reclassified to the 2019 class and the Tennessee basketball team is in his Top-6. Could he be a VFL?

Big news hit the internet on Sunday afternoon when 2020 four-star point guard, Jalen Cone, announced he would be reclassifying to the 2019 class.

Rick Barnes and Tennessee basketball were the first to give Cone the option to reclassify to the 2019 class from 2020. The decision certainly stems from the departure of Jordan Bone, who appears that he is ready for the professional game, even if he isn’t drafted in the 2019 NBA Draft. Bone has even received a late second-round grade from Sports Illustrated, and that’s even before the NBA combined.

According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Cone was ranked 81st in the nation, 11th point guard in the 2020 class, and the fourth best player from North Carolina. It’s tough to tell how he ranks in the 2019 class, and I’m not sure it will change.

In a video Cone released on Twitter Sunday afternoon, he included Tennessee as one of his top six schools. Other teams that made the list are Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, Wake Forest, NC State, and Boston College. Cone also said he would announce his school of choice on Thursday at 3:45 pm from his high school.

His announcement comes at a weird time. Cone is currently scheduled to visit Tennessee this weekend. Why would he put the Vols in his top-6 if he’s never visited and didn’t plan on committing to the university?

Maybe Cone is dropping a clue he is choosing the Vols and still will have a great Mother’s Day weekend in Knoxville? Or it could mean he is committing to another school and the visit to Knoxville is canceled.

Cone would be a massive get for the Vols especially if Jordan Bone and Grant Williams keep their names in the draft. The 5-foot-10 guard is a scoring machine despite being smaller than average guard nowadays. One of Cone’s greatest attributes is his ball-handling ability, something that they Vols will desperately need next season.

Despite reclassifying, you’d think Cone would have a role in the Vols rotation next season. But, he would also get playing time for Buzz Williams down in College Station. I don’t have any insider knowledge other than Cone wants to stay “closer” to home, but I would be surprised if he doesn’t end up with the Aggies, Hokies or the Vols.
