Our top out of state players so far have covered people from the South, from the West Coast and from Canada. But the East Coast has been completely left out of the equation. Well, Tennessee football’s starting quarterback hails from New Jersey, so it’s a pretty safe bet that the Vols are in okay shape on this front.

Jarrett Guarantano is about to enter his second full year as a starter after one and a half years of experience in two different systems, one in the pro style and one in the spread. He’s staying in the pro style for his second straight season, but this time it’s Jim Chaney coming in.

Chaney knows how to make quarterbacks look good, and Guarantano has already done that. He was the MVP of the Vols spring game, following up with a season in which he was solid by completing over 62 percent of his passes for 12 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. His step forward this year has to be making more big plays after only throwing for 1,907 yards.

With two elite receivers we have already put on this list, one elite running back, and the two best playmakers being on our list of top in-state talent, Guarantano has the weapons to do that. He’s the conductor of the train, though, so he’s the most important of all of them. Combine that with what we know he can do, and he belongs at No. 4 on this list.
