The Lady Volunteers missing out on the Women’s College World Series leads our Tennessee Vols news for Memorial Day Monday, May 27, 2019.

Happy Memorial Day for 2019. This is a unique day on its own, but it’s also a unique day for the Tennessee Vols since the major news is all on the diamond. And leading it is something that’s not really good news.

Our morning update on Rocky Top begins with a crushing defeat in softball from Sunday. Then we have coverage of the baseball team waiting on the edge of its seat for a major event on Monday. No football or basketball is in the works.

Following that, we do have recaps in men’s tennis and track and field. Some of that is good news, and some of that is bad news as well. So in a rare day, let’s begin our morning report with the softball news.

Softball eliminated from NCAAs – Wes Rucker, GoVols247

The Tennessee Lady Vols softball team lost a rubber match to the Florida Gators Sunday, eliminating them from the super regional in Gainesville and resulting in them missing out on a chance at the Women’s College World Series. After winning in extra innings Saturday to even the series, Tennessee lost in extra innings Sunday. They finish the year 43-17 overall.

"Jaimie Hoover’s walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted No. 5 Florida to a 2-1 win over No. 12 Tennessee in the winner-take-all third game of this weekend’s super regional in Gainesville. Tennessee had some heroics of its own to force extra-innings, tying the score at 1-1 in the top of the seventh on a leadoff home run from senior Haley Bearden."

Baseball NCAA selection show set for Monday – NCAA.com

The Tennessee Vols baseball team will find out Monday if it gets a ticket to the NCAA Tournament. They learned Sunday they would not be hosting a regional. However, with a 38-19 record overall, they have a great shot still at the postseason.

"The 2019 NCAA baseball tournament field will be revealed at noon ET on Monday, May 27. You can watch the 64-team bracket release on ESPNU or WatchESPN."

Multiple Vols punch tickets to Track and Field championships – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols track and field program had seven athletes and one relay squad punch their tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday. That came on the heels of three athletes punching their ticket Friday.

"The Vols and Lady Vols will be well represented with 14 student-athletes competing in 11 events at nationals, which will be held June 5-8 in Austin, Texas. To qualify for the championships, an athlete must have finished top-12 in their respective event at the regional meet."

Men’s tennis pairing eliminated in semifinalBobby Knight, College Tennis Today

The Tennessee Vols duo of Timo Stodder and Preston Touliatos fell to the UCLA Bruins duo of Maxime Cressy and Keegan Smith Friday. With the losses, they finish the year 24-8 together.

"Three of the four men’s doubles semifinalists came from the SEC but just one made it to the finals after the second-seeded UCLA duo of Maxime Cressy and Keegan Smith rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tennessee’s Timo Stodder and Preston Touliatos. Cressy and Smith will try to become UCLA’s 14th men’s doubles team to win a NCAA Doubles Championship, second straight and third in the last four years, when they face Alabama’s Patrick Kaukovalta and Mazen Osama."
