Tennessee football’s fourth official head coach, we couldn’t include Sax Crawford on a page to himself. After all, he played for the Vols for two years and then became a head coach just two years later, only leading the program for one season.

Crawford played for Gilbert Kelly one season and Hubert Fisher another season. The first team he played for went 3-3-2, and the second team he played for went 6-2. However, he only went 3-5 his one years as a head coach. However, one notable thing about that year is the Vols beat the Alabama Crimson Tide for the first time ever 5-0.

Harvey Robinson was a little more established than Sax Crawford. He played for UT when they were more established as a program, spending time as Robert Neyland’s quarterback in 1931 and 1932. During those years, he was part of a major winning tradition, going 18-0-2 and capturing a Southern Conference Title in 1932.

As a coach, though, it was a different story. To be fair, Robinson had the impossible task of replacing Neyland in his final stint. And he was a trusted assistant who was part of Neyland’s late 1940s early 1950s success before that.

But two years after the 1951 national championship, he was only 6-4-1 in his first year as head coach. A year later, he fell to 4-6. After that, he was gone and became an assistant with the Florida Gators. But he did return to Rocky Top as an assistant.
