5. Ty Chandler vs. UTEP

Stat line: 12 carries, 158 yards, 1 touchdown

Result: Tennessee wins 24-0

Similar to Bryce Thompson against ETSU, there’s not much to celebrate about doing a lot against the UTEP Miners. But, once again, Ty Chandler was using this game to provide a glimpse of what he could do for Tennessee football in the future.

Entering his sophomore year last season, he was unable to play in the Vols’ first two game against the West Virginia Mountaineers and then the Bucs. But two games later, against the UTEP Miners, he finally got his chance to show his skill.

Chandler, who has made a habit of huge plays on long runs, whether it be on kickoff returns, in the passing game or taking handoffs, had one of those moments here. In his first game back, he largely sat behind Tim Jordan in the first half but still got some reps.

Then, up 10-0 and needing breathing room, Chandler took the ball on the Vols’ first offensive play in the second half and ran 81 yards to the end zone for a touchdown. He showed exactly what he could become, and that wasn’t all he did. The guy finished with 158 yards and a touchdown, averaging over 13 yards a carry.

Even without that touchdown run, Chandler would have had 77 yards on 11 carries, averaging seven yards a carry. So he showed immediately upon his return how dynamic of a playmaker he is, and the Vols expect more of that from him this year.
